The Apple Shed “Farm to Families” Produce Membership Program Starts in June
Beginning mid-June of this year, The Apple Shed will launch its first-ever CSA-style membership program.  The program, called “Farm to Families,” will offer members a weekly crate of fruits and vegetables throughout the summer.  Registration is open now, Sign Up Here.

In May 2014, we published an article in our “At the Core of It” e-mail newsletter that talked about CSAs and why we debated but ultimately chose not to offer one to our customers.  For those of you who are unfamiliar, a CSA is a program where members prepay a farmer for a “share” of this year’s harvest in exchange for a weekly allotment of produce.   After three more years of contemplation, seeing our customers buy CSA shares from other farms, and hearing our friends talk about online food “subscription” services which include produce, we have decided that we will indeed offer this type of program starting in 2017!

Members of our “Farm to Families” program will receive a crate of locally grown produce every week for 12 weeks beginning on June 14.  It is our intent that the majority of the crate will be grown right here at The Apple Shed, but we will supplement with locally grown produce as needed. Crates will be pre-packed, but there will be a “swap” table set up where members can trade produce with each other.  Additionally, the crate will include recipes and ideas for how to use the contents of the crate.  Pickup will be at The Apple Shed on Wednesday from 3pm-6pm or Saturday from 8am-11am.

We will deliver “Farm to Families” crates once a week to local employers having at least 10 employees participating, if you are an employer located in Newark, Lyons, Marion, Sodus, Phelps, Williamson or Palmyra and would be interested in this service, please call us at 315-331-6294.  At this time, we will not offer other drop-off sites.  This service is also not available for shipment.

For the 2017 season, membership in the program will be limited, with ½ for pickup on Wednesday and ½ on Saturday.  If the program goes well, membership will be expanded for 2018 season.

We recognize that this type of program is not for everyone, but does meet a need for many busy couples and families.  Members will not only get great fresh produce every week, but will also get into the habit of eating and cooking at home more and get to try new fruit and vegetables.  For customers that find this type of program to be too much, we’d love for you to visit us at The Apple Shed, we’ll be open with regular hours beginning June 3.  For every 20 “Farm to Families” memberships purchased, we will donate one subscription to the Newark Food Closet.

What your “Farm to Families” crate might include:

June: Strawberries (x2), Cucumbers, Radishes, Spinach, Zucchini
July: Blueberries, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Salad Mix, Broccoli
August: Peaches, Blueberries, Tomatoes, Romaine, Sweet Corn, Melon

Cost of the 12-week membership is $250, payable at the time of sign-up Here  Membership sign-up closes 5/1/16, or when sold out.
